As soon as your child starts to read the Read Write Inc. Phonics storybooks, he or she will bring home a ‘book bag book’. This book builds upon the ideas and many of the words in the storybook he or she has just read in school. Reading the story 3 times at home will help to build your child’s fluency and understanding of the story. In addition to a book bag book your child will also have access to their phonics storybook through Oxford Owl as an eBook. Storytime is an important part of our day at school and we would also love children to enjoy stories at home and build a love for books. Each child will also have the opportunity to choose a picture book to share at home.
We love to hear how your child is progressing with their reading at home, comments can be made in your child’s reading record as they read at home.
Below is a copy of the Year 1 common exception words. By the end of Year 1 children should be able to read and spell each of the Year 1 words.
During the Summer term children will take a phonics screening check. The check is to confirm whether individual children have learnt phonic decoding to an appropriate standard. The checks consist of 40 words, some real and some nonsense words that your child will be asked to read one-on-one with a teacher. This will take up to 10 minutes, the children will not know they are being ‘tested’. Please click on the PDF for infomation which you may find useful.
