PE and School Sports at Hodge Clough
At Hodge Clough, we understand that PE and School Sports plays a key part in teaching about healthy, active lifestyles. We offer a broad range of activities to give children the confidence to engage in physical activity and achieve their 60 minutes per day target. We are an inclusive school and everyone has equal opportunities to participate and achieve their personal best.
Children enjoy PE; they are keen to take part and talk about what they are doing in their lessons with enthusiasm. They look forward to the lesson and are eager to change into their kits which they wear their with pride.
Multi-skills lessons develop FUNdamnetal movement skills and children become increasing competant and confident.
Children work both individually and with others to develop social skills and learn to consider and care for each other.
The infant site has a wide range of gymnastic equipment which the children enjoy using.
In 2017/2018, we have taken part in the latest trials for GO-RIDE-GO; a new initiative to promote cycling in schools.
At the junior site, we continue to develop a broader range of skills and learn how to apply them in different ways. Lessons are inclusive and well differientated so that all children are challenges and make good progress.
One lesson per week focusses on a specific sport with our full-time sports coach. The range of sports on offer is vast - hockey, basketball, handball, tag rugby, table tennis, mini tennis, volleyball, cricket, rounders, orienteering, dance and fitness.
Children start to gain an understanding of tactics and anaylse and evaluate performance. We focus on fair play, respect and teamwork as we mover towards competative sports.
Year 6 pupils complete a 19 week swimming programme at Oldham Swimming Pool.
In KS2, we select a year group to take part in a Bikeability certified course in the summer term.
We recognise the need for development; Oldham Sport Development and Manchester United Foundation support our delivery of PE lessons to enhcance our curriculum.
SEND / Gifted and Talented
We have a range of equipment to suit all levels, abilities and needs. We have an excellent school SEN coordinator who supports PE planning for children with additional needs or who are simply struggling with some body movements and coordination.
Children who show potential in sport are challenged during PE. They respect our Sports Coach and value her committment to develop them as athletes. Miss White delivers additonal sessions and works with other coaches, she links with clubs and regional governing bodies to ensure these children are on the correct pathway for a future in sport.
