Welcome to the Maths page.  At Hodge Clough we want our children to become eager mathematicians and take great care to provide opportunities to promote a love of learning.

We are use the White Rose Maths approach across Years 1 to 6. White Rose Maths encourages a Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract approach to learning, it is also inspired and informed by robust, world-class research and global maths experts. This approach builds confidence, resilience and a passion for maths. Maths is an exciting adventure that everyone can enjoy, value and master! Teachers at Hodge Clough have been developing a mastery approach for the last few years. EYFS use the White Rose principles as they approach more formalised learning. 

Teaching and learning style

The school uses a variety of teaching and learning styles in mathematics lessons. Our principal aim is to develop children’s knowledge, skills and understanding in mathematics. We do this through a daily mathematics lesson where children are given opportunities for:

  • Practical activities and mathematical games
  • Problem solving
  • Open and closed tasks
  • Individiual, group and whole class discussions and activities
  • A range of methods of calculating e.g. mental, pencil and paper and using a calculator
  • Working with computers as a mathematical tool
  • Using a wide range of support resources e.g. number squares, base 10, digit cards and number lines
  • Using and applying their learning in everyday situations

In classrooms, you can expect to see high levels of pupil engagement and involvement. Concrete materials (usually in the form of representations or manipulatives) are available to support the children's thinking as they explore. Pupil talk should be encouraged at every opportunity enabling peer support, challenge and/or refinement of ideas.
